Can dogs walk after femoral head removal

Successful post-operative repair is usually possible with walking. The return of movement and the disappearance of pain after femoral head resection depends largely on the surgical technique, the duration of the pre-existing hip lesion, the extent of the lesion, and post-operative care. Canine femoral head resection is the complete removal of the head and neck of the femur leaving the femur partially preserved through the muscles, ligaments and tendons in the area to form a pseudo-joint. This procedure is mainly used for canine hip dysplasia, hip dislocation, fractures etc. Through this procedure the dog’s pain can be relieved and normal walking restored.
