Acute kidney failure in cats

Acute renal failure is a syndrome, not a specific disease, and refers to a sudden decline in kidney function. Most of it is caused by toxins, infections or ischaemic factors. There are three types of causes of acute renal failure: pre-renal, renal and post-renal. Pre-renal is caused by inadequate blood supply to the kidneys and dehydration. Renal is caused by problems with the kidney itself. Postrenal is caused by an obstruction in the ureter or urethra.
