The German Shepherd has a shorter coat and coat colors of teal, black, light gray, and yellow, while the Border Collie has a longer coat and colors of black and white, meteorite, yellow and white, and brown and white. In terms of size, the Border Collie is a medium-sized dog and the German Shepherd is a large dog. The difference between the two is still significant and can be easily seen. The German Shepherd was the mainstay of military and police riot dogs around the world six or seven years ago, and is now gradually being phased out by the Equine (military) and Rottweiler (police riot) dogs.
