Dog lung schistosomiasis symptoms Detailed physical characteristics of canine lung schistosomiasis

Canine pulmonary schistosomiasis, also known as pulmonary leech, is also known as schistosomiasis because the pathogen belongs to the genus Schistosoma. There are many species of schistosomes, the most common of which is Schistosoma weissei, which is found in the lungs, meninges and trachea of dogs and cats, and is mainly prevalent in Zhejiang, Taiwan and northeast China. In Guangdong, Sichuan, Jiangxi and Guizhou provinces, a species of Schistosoma canis is also found, usually in the subcutaneous nodules, but less often in the lungs. The pathogen of canine pulmonary schistosomiasis and its life history of Schistosoma weissei is dark red, 7.5~16 mm long and 4~8 mm wide, with a raised dorsal surface and a flattened ventral surface, much like a half-grain of red bean. The worms are often parasitized in pairs in sacs formed by the lung tissue, which are connected to the bronchi. The eggs are swallowed into the digestive tract with the host’s sputum, excreted in the feces, and hatch in the water to produce trichariae, which split and multiply in the first intermediate host, the freshwater snail. The larvae escape from the snail and invade the second intermediate host (crab), where they become cysts. When dogs and cats eat raw or semi-raw crabs containing cysts, they break out of the cysts in the small intestine and pass through the intestinal wall, abdominal cavity, diaphragm and pleura to the lungs, where they develop into adult worms. The common clinical signs of canine pulmonary schistosomiasis are coughing, which may be accompanied by hemoptysis, panting, fever and diarrhea, and black feces. The diagnosis can be confirmed by the detection of eggs in the sputum and feces in combination with clinical signs and epidemiological data. First, apply pyrazolone for deworming at a dosage of 50 mg/kg body weight orally for 3 to 5 days. Or use thiodichlorophenol, dosage of 100 mg / kg body weight, oral, daily or every other day to give children, 10 ~ 20 treatment days for a course of treatment. Second, fresh crab should be prohibited as feed for dogs and cats in areas where the disease is endemic.
