Origin of the Golden RetrieverThe Golden Retriever originated in the 19th century, and although some believe this hound evolved from the Russian circus dog breed, it is more like a cross between the yellow Smooth Hound and the Tweed Water Spaniel (Tweed) and the slightly later introduced Irish Squat Hound, Labrador and Bloodhound. Formerly used to catch waterfowl, they are popular with hunters as they can swim in water in all climates. It is now often kept as a family dog, and since it was first shown in 1908, it has become very popular and is still popular around the world.
