Hiccups in dogs are usually caused by eating too fast, food that is too cold. They can also be caused by irritating food or hiccup spasms, so it is important to control the amount and speed of eating. It is normal for dogs to have hiccups when they breathe in cool air, which immediately narrows their airways, so all they need to do is drink warm water and keep their dogs warm. Hiccups are a reaction to some kind of physical stimulation. Puppies often have an imperfectly developed chest and diaphragm, so once the chest, septum and abdomen are stimulated for some reason, the stimulus signal is transmitted to the cervical spinal cord “hiccup center” and then through the phrenic and intercostal nerves to the septum, which causes the intercostal muscles to contract, resulting in uncontrollable hiccups.
