It is best to remove the wolf toe to avoid accidental injury to the dog in the future, or if the wolf toe is overdeveloped and embedded in the limb causing great pain. Some dogs are born with wolf toes on their hind legs, usually due to bad genetics. In the professional dog show world, not all dogs need to have wolf toes removed, so there is a distinction between “must”, “can” and “cannot”. Both Great Pyrenees and Anatolian Shepherds can have two wolf toes on one hind leg, the former must be preserved, while the latter is allowed to be removed.
