How to recognize a Flat-coated Retriever There are only three things to look for in a Flat-coated Retriever, color, size and appearance. Flat-coated Retrievers are predominantly pure black or pure liver, with very few other colors, and all but the former two colors are considered failures when judging the class. The Flat-coated Retriever’s head is long, neat, and has an inconspicuous rear occipital bone. The black Flat-coated Retriever has a black nose and the liver-colored Flat-coated Retriever has a brown nose. The entire body of the Flat-coated Retriever is long and very sturdy, and the tail is very long and broom-like.
