The cornea is the transparent layer in the middle of the eye through which the pupil can be seen. The conjunctiva is divided into two parts, one is called the bulbar conjunctiva and the other is called the lid conjunctiva. The bulbar conjunctiva is the transparent membrane surrounding the cornea on the surface of the “white eye”. The lid conjunctiva is lined with the inner surface of the eyelid. Keratitis is caused by a bacterial infection, while conjunctivitis is caused by external irritation. Both eye diseases cause increased discharge and pain in the dog’s eyes, while keratitis causes the eye to become cloudy and conjunctivitis causes the eye to become red and swollen and the dog to become photophobic.
