Constipation in cats is a digestive disorder in which the intestinal contents become stagnant and dry due to impaired intestinal tube motility and secretion disorders, resulting in incomplete or complete obstruction of the intestine. The disease mostly occurs in the colon and rectum of cats, and is especially prevalent in young cats, older cats and long-haired cats. The longer the constipation, the more difficult it is to treat, and in severe cases, the condition can be worsened by autointoxication or secondary to other diseases. The causes of this disease are the following three factors: 1. Feeding management: factors such as long-term feeding of dry food, lack of water, eating human hair and foreign bodies, insufficient exercise and sudden changes in feed, environment and management may induce this disease. 2. Diseases: painful defecation diseases (such as rectal polyps, proctitis, rectal stenosis, tumors, anal abscesses, etc.), constipation occurs due to the disappearance of normal bowel movements. 3. Self: Diseases with impaired defecation movements (such as medullary dislocation, pelvic fracture and hind limb fracture, etc.) can cause constipation. In the early stage of the disease, the sick cat defecates hard and excretes a small amount of dry stool with mucus, or a small amount of foul-smelling loose stool. In the late stage of the disease, the sick cat may show restlessness, try to defecate but not easy to discharge, nervousness, chirping and frequent review of the abdomen. Treatment 1, enema therapy: for mild and simple constipation. Use 40–80ml of warm soapy water, enema into the intestine, and moderate pressure on the intestine with extra-abdominal secreted fecal mass. Generally more effective. 2, drug therapy: internal appropriate amount of laxative. Such as magnesium sulfate 5 – 30 grams or liquid paraffin oil 5 – 50 ml, internal. 3, surgery therapy: severe intestinal constipation, with the above methods can not be effective, feasible surgery, remove intestinal cavity feces. Pay attention to feeding more wet food, increase the water content in the diet. Add mild fecal softeners, such as lactulose. Take some probiotics as appropriate, or long term.
