Most dogs will play with their tails by spinning in place around themselves and running up after their tails. When they want to sleep, they will also spin in place a few times to expand their domain and then lie down to sleep. When you want to defecate, you will also spin in place, not only to level the grass to make space, or to find a stable magnetic field for defecation. When your dog chases its own tail and spins in place, it may be that it is bored. If you keep ignoring it and let it continue to spin in place, it may take the spinning as a playful act and occasionally lose its balance and fall and get hurt in the spinning.
